Travel Blog: Tajpur
Kolkata is lucky. You go little up north you have the foothills of
Himalayas and drive down south makes you meet sandy beaches. Bengal has been
blessed with beauty.
The city can sometime get to you. You just need a quick escape.
And that’s exactly what Tajpur offer. Tajpur is a very peaceful beach. There isn’t
too many people, good simple food and relaxation.
Where?
Tajpur is located in Purba
Medinipur, in the state of West Bengal, India on the shore of Bay of Bengal.
How to get
there?
The best time to leave Kolkata is around 6 am. The earlier the
better as you will miss the morning traffic. If you are caught in the traffic
it could take you an hour or more to reach the New Hoogly Bridge. It takes about
4 hours to reach via car. You catch the NH16. Some roads are under construction
this cuses an additional delay, I am hoping the roads get fixed soon.
There are three toll booths on the way.
The interesting places to stop on the way is Decathlon, it’s a
sports retail store which have lots of cool stuff which travelers dig. You
could pick up slippers, hammocks, or maybe a beach ball.
For breakfast you could stop at the numerous dhabas near Contai.
Recently they have opened a KFC too.
Where to
stay?
We stayed at Resort Abasar. The best part of this resort is
that they have a private access to the beach. You walk through a small forest
to reach the isolated beach. The mornings are magical. You can hear different
birds sing while the golden sun rises.
Another main factor for choosing this place is that it is
pet friendly. If you want to take your dog it’s a great place. They can roam
around the garden and explore the place.
The food of this place is wholesome Bengali food. The staff
is friendly.
Amenities: Geyser, Cable TV, Free parking, Children Play area,
Dining Room
However, there is no Wi-fi
available or any intercom.

What to
do?
You could enjoy swimming in the sea. Build sand castles, collect
shells, take photographs and when you feel dehydrated you could walk to the
small shacks and enjoy sweet coconut water.
Tajpur does not have fancy restaurants on the beach, but they have
local families who run the shack and will really shower their simple homely
hospitality. They will have fresh fish to offer. Also, if you want they would
grill roast chicken for you.
Recently, they have started strict patrolling on the beach. Please
do not get drunk and go swimming. It’s very dangerous. Many people have died
due to this. It really does not matter if you are a good swimmer or not, the
sea has sudden swells and there are areas where there is no sand but slippery
mud.
We met the coast guard. He was helpful and polite. He was doing is
job. People are not allowed to be on the beach after 10:30 pm
Doggy Tips
I carried the Meal Pouch of Pedigree for Leo. It’s a meal which
you can mix with some rice.
Do Avoid giving your doggy any sea food, especially prawn or crab
as allergic reaction might happen.
Do not feed you doggy at least 2 hours before a long drive. As
they are not use to motion often they could feel sick.
The dogs will be running around a lot so always keep fresh water
available.
At night do keep the dogs indoors as dogs tend to get extra
territorial at night and some local dogs might come in.
A sincere request for those who are visiting; do not litter the beach. Please carry a bag where your personal trash like cigarette buds, chips packets, beer bottle etc can be collected and disposed responsibly.
